Contact lenses are a safe and comfortable way to correct your vision — but only when they are looked after properly. Most eye problems linked to contact lenses come from small shortcuts in cleaning and handling. A few steady habits keep your lenses (and your eyes) in good shape.
Wash and dry your hands
Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your lenses, and dry them with a lint-free towel. Avoid moisturising soaps and hand creams just before putting lenses in — they can leave a film on the lens that blurs your vision.
Rub, rinse and store — every time
- Rub and rinse each lens with fresh multipurpose solution every time you store them.
- Never “top up” old solution — always use fresh solution in a clean case.
- Empty the case after use, rinse it with solution, and leave it open to air-dry.
- Replace your lens case at least every three months.
Keep water away from your lenses
Never rinse or store your lenses in tap water — it can carry germs that cause serious eye infections. Do not swim or shower with your lenses in. If you swim, use daily disposable lenses with goggles, and throw the lenses away afterwards.
Stick to your wearing schedule
Daily, two-weekly and monthly lenses each have a fixed replacement date — replace them on schedule, even if they still feel fine. Never sleep in your lenses unless they are specifically prescribed for overnight wear, and give your eyes a break by taking them out before bed.
Makeup and lenses
Put your lenses in before you apply makeup, and take them out before you remove it. Replace mascara every three months and do not share eye makeup — both are common sources of eye irritation and infection.
Red flags — take them out and get help
If you notice pain, redness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision or discharge, take the lenses out straight away and see an eye care professional. Do not try to wait it out, and do not reuse a lens that has been in a sore eye.
